In they wild they use all that aggression to hold a good territory that they think is sutible for breeding and try there best to keep everything away from it usually he will only let the strongest female thats ready to breed in his territory if he thinks the female isn't good enough and doesn't wan't to breed with it he will chase it off
So he either doesn't think there ready to breed and sees them as a threat to his territory or is testing them to see if there tuff enough to breed with him which it sounds like there failing the test i would seperate the females and fatten them up like said before then when there totally ready to breed and are in good shape he is much more likely to accept them
