Leave it bb or add black sand, a black background. IF you look around there are a few orino babies going for cheap.....or atleast compared to the bigger guys.
 
I'm not going to worry about plants in this tank. I may just put a few more rocks like the ones that are already in there and leave it at that.
 
i know exactly what you mean. dont blow all your money on aquascaping. just get some fish that you want for now and youll eventually find some good deals on sand, rocks, driftwood through here.
 
I'd go with a gravel substrate if you want it to look "natural", I don't know how much of the Amazon/tributaries have black sand. I normally get my gravel from Home Depot/Lowes for like $4 for a 40# bag or so, they don't have a lot of variety but I like their pond pebbles. I'll get some shots of my 125 with gravel
 
There aren't many amazonian gravel bottom rivers or lakes either. It's mostly mud.. lol... How's that for natural. My 180g and 30g had black sand and looked pretty natural looking. I liked it. I think I'm just going to get a little bit of natural gravel to put in. Medium pieces, not the small stuff.
