Awhile back i had a bunch of Q about setting up a 90 tank but due to money issues i want to put that to the side and do a smaller tank. I have a 29 gallon right now doing nothing, my question is because it doesnt have the overflow in it can i just drill 2 holes in the back wall with bulkheads for the in and out to the sump??? I know it works in freshwater and dont see why it wouldnt for salt but i figured i would bring it up to the experts. Any advice would be great and thanx in advance.

Maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't it be easier to add a hang on the back filter and a hang on skimmer if needed rather than drilling an overflow and sump

i like the idea of a sump better because it gives u more water volume and can use a in sump skimmer and keep the take clean just like the bigger tanks. i found a overflow kit pretty cheap http://glass-holes.com/Complete-Overflow-Kits_c3.htm they come with everything but the drill. i think i might give this a shot. drilling isnt hard just have to take your time.

Glass holes kits are very nice

29g is pretty small. I would prob do HOB on a tank that small. Esp if money is an issue. You drill and add another tank, your adding more complexity, thus money. Just my .02

If this is going to be your only SW tank and you want you already have asump. I say go ahead an drill it as long as the bottom isn't tempered glass. You might as well set it up how you want it the first time instead of setting it up and a year down the line wish you had drilled it. Then you would have to pull everything out and disturb the whole tank.. I think you have already made up your mind on this and plan on drillng it. So to answer your question yes you can drill it and setup an overflow..

The kit i found doesn't drill into the bottom it goes into the back and a small box mounts for the overflow then u drill anouther for the return line. My whole idea is to do it right the first time the wife is on board with this idea more then the 90 gallon (those of u that r married know that if the wife isn't happy no ones happy). so im going to sell off all the big tank and use that money for the build. I have the 10 gallon to use for the sump, i have a stand to use. Should b better for me anyways because i live in a apt there is no room for a RO unit so i will have to buy water from my LFS for water changes and it will be cheaper then a 90 water change. A guy that lives in my complex also has a nano reef and is helping me with the set up. So hopefully soon i can get this build going

Deff. Will once i get the build moving i still have a few big tanks to sell so i have room and extra money to use. Going to use my 37 gallon instead with a etss sump that i have to repair some holes on the side the guy befor me had external pumps so i have a few holes to plug. Going to build a bigger stand to hold the bigger sump. Probly start the stand soon so when my 55 sells i can start the build.
