Wait, my boy f1 is doing less water changes? One of the many ways we originally met and began talking was over what I deemed his OCD water change routine. He's doing less now? Mind=blown

personally, I love RD consistently pointing that things other than nitrates are a huge reason for wc's--> and you can't test for pheromones, hormones, water nutrients etc. I mean seriously, that was a big eye opener for me regarding probable effects on growth. I have seen growth spurts when I did excess wc's "according to water tests".
and also the opposite. wait for nitrates and growth is slower.

I agree you can't test for those "other things" but if it's the norm to change 50% every few days because of these "other things" then fishkeeping isn't for me. Or fishkeeping is for me....and I just don't care or bother to change that often. If your fish are growing, showing good colors, eating, breeding, then that's all I care about. Once week will suffice FOR ME. These "other things" are just going to have to wait until I do the weekly WC. Some people (not talking about you or anything) over complicate things when it comes to keeping fish. Give them a wc once a week and for the most part everything will be fine. If your overstocked then that is completely different, but your average tank will suffice once a week WC.

My method, but, with my big tanks, even once a week is not mandatory.

Fish grow, a normal, lively and healthy the way i keep them.

Smallert tanks i do weekly wc's.

But after nearly 40 years with fish let me state that i abhorr water changes. It always is a chore.

I have not done a test in years.

People who trust in their methods and know what they are doing can report exactly that, what their method is.

This has nothing to do with advice, or lack of it.

Each one should know how confident he is with his methods and should create his own schedule.

If you feel you need to test, well test.
But we don't need to shout about it and consider a " bad advice" someone who states otherwise.

I realize this, but let's not forget there are hundreds of new members coming here each day! That's all I'm saying and major pointed it out.

I don't know what your problem is, but if I decide to flame you, you'll know it. I came to this discussion to add what I felt was a perspective that had obviously been missing - that being nitrate values aren't the only thing to consider when it comes to water quality, and/or water changes.

If you feel that after keeping fish for less then 3 years, that you know more on this subject than I do, and that my previous comments are somehow wrong, then please feel free to enlighten me as to exactly what I am "wrong" about. Otherwise .....

As far as maintenance costs ........

I've owned my own home, and have being paying for water usage for 30+ years. I also live in a part of the world where for 6 months of the year the water runs out of the tap at approx 50F, which is approx 30 degrees cooler than my tanks, and all of my tanks are located in the basement portion of our home, so overall power consumption just for heating the water is also an issue.

In a perfect world, where money grows on trees, I'd have all of my tanks on a flow through system where 100% of the water was turned over every 24 hrs. But obviously for most of us, including myself, this isn't a perfect world.

For myself, fishkeeping is a thing of discipline, as in only keeping what I can personally maintain long term in what I consider a very healthy environment. One being a large enough glass box for the species & numbers that I keep, and secondly keeping the water quality as pristine as humanly possible.

Man you seem to know a lot about me, I have been in fk since college, which was 7 years ago. However I have recently been obsessed with it for about 3 of those years. I respect your vast knowledge and have always made that clear, but the way you present it is that your the god of fk, trust me I'm not the only one who feels this way, don't be so quick to judge and assume any young kid doesn't know squat! were all here to learn, remember that! I respect my elders if they respect me back!

Take a deep breath and let's just calm down, if its that big of a deal why don't you put me on the ignore list?

I know a cycled and established tank doesn't need to be tested all the time, but for new fk it is a good idea, not everyone is a 60 year old veteran fk, and that doesn't make them any better or worse then you!

Lets cool it. This discussion is too interesting, for vets and newbies alike, to spoil it.

F1 you are a young guy, someone who will surely grow in the hobby and fishkeeping for years to come and have a lot to say and teach. But lighten up, please. Do not stress yourself over everything so easily, and do not pick fights with " older people". You may be in the right in some instances, but you will loose it in the end because of your somewhat excitable posture.

My 2 cents, said in absolute peace.

VET - I'm not looking for a BFF, so what you think of me personally doesn't matter to me in the least. And suggesting that others agree with you, doesn't affect me one iota either. It just shows me how insecure you are.

Again, If you feel that you know more on this subject than I do, and that my previous comments are somehow wrong, then please feel free to enlighten me as to exactly what I am "wrong" about.

BTW - I learn something new about this great hobby almost every day, which is part of what I love so much about this hobby. It's a never ending learning curve. Not a god, not a know it all, and never claimed to be an expert on anything.

Just an old fart whose been kicking around this hobby for a few odd years, and knows a thing or two about keeping fish. :)
