I did just that...gave away all my cichlids and turned my tanks saltwater and focused on tanks centered around eels. Had my cichlid setups approximately 6-7 years at that time

I kept changing every time my lfs got fish that I liked the look of. now I just get more tanks so I can keep them all. (to sad tosay goodbye)

I wish I could get more tanks but don't have the room and I don't feel like I'm ready to tackle a bunch of tanks.

I keep angels in my 55 with schooling tetras, I have a pair of black ones and i just reserved a pair that were labeled as "Metallic Blue" and have the color of like an adolescent EBJD except its all over and is really really shiny, so i recommend Angelfish for variety, there is all kinds of colors, and they are full of personality, also you could still keep your clowns and have a pair of German Blue rams with hem too, since you like the smaller cichlids.. hope i helped.

If you want something active and are into cichlids but want to stay with a 55, you may want to consider Africans (Mbuna). Demasoni are super colorful stay around 2-3 inches and are the most active fish Ive ever kept. Just add some sand and alot of rock work.......

Sorry I've just never liked African cichlids and I don't think I ever will.

I really want to get into cichlids but I just want peaceful ones and I know when it comes to cichlids that can be very unpredictable. I'd love to get 2-3 different cichlids and at least one school of dithers, but idk if that's possible.

Thanks to all who have given advice so far, I really appreciate it.
