I'm close to calling it quits...

Sorry to hear about your troubles and loss of your tats.I have kept them in the past but couldn't seem to get them to live longer than close to a year...One thing about them though,if you try them again, don't keep them with even slightly aggressive fish as they stress easily.

sorry for the loss, get armatus instead

thanks! I would love to get an armatus (for their personality), but it's just a personal preference for the tats. I love the red coloring of the tails & the overall shape more so than the armatus. It'll take a much longer time to reach it's maximum size, but a full grown tat will be a beast nonetheless :)

doesnt look like ich to me

I'm sure it was ich. These cloudy white spots started appearing about a week after the ich outbreak.. still haven't figured out exactly what they were though.

Thanks! You helped me ID the first one I owned :) I've come to learn that as tempting it is to buy other fish when you happen to frequently visit the LFS like myself, Payaras, for the most part are meant to be kept by themselves.. if you want them to thrive.

Side note: thanks for everyone that chimed in or gave a word of encouragement. To lose both really sucked but it's all good.. I'm already looking forward to starting up my next project :D

The ich I've seen goes all over the body and not in patches. White patches look like some type of fungal infection.

On another note I had a Scomb go through a bout of ich. High temp and H2O changes did the trick. Although even if it looks like the ich is gone continue keep up with the routine for at least a week just to be sure. I've had reinfections because I didn't get all the little buggers.

yup... these patches had nothing to do with the ich that did take over all the walls, water, and body of the fish. I guess you just can't see them in the pictures (I didn't really try to focus the camera on them). there wasn't that much ich left by the time I took the pictures
