it's been in a friend's pond and they were getting pretty beaten up by some turtles...i didn't want them in my tank so long story short he chucked em in the freezer. since we've always wanted to try gar & they aren't avail in the wild.....

would the toxins really be bad if we just ate a really small bit? just enough to get a taste.

Your going to taste crap.. That is not Gar at it's best. Your just sampling dodo..What is the point just throw it away.

i've read somewhere that gars are poisonous? correct me if i'm wrong.

interesting thing is that the larvae are also poisonous...mammals, birds, and primarily crustaceans are susceptible to the "ichthyotoxin" as it has been sometimes called.--

fat is where a lot of toxins accumulate in fishes, this is why fattier fishes have higher food advisory levels than leaner, smaller, forage fishes. it's just not worth it, and like perun said, it's going to taste like crap (not carp...which would actually be better than what you've got).

it's up to you, but we've already given you our info. i don't think it's worth it just to say "we ate some gar". you could feasibly order some gar meat from the US if you really wanted the good stuff (i believe LA ships out some of their gator gar meat...which tastes really good).--
