I'm getting a Praying Mantis!

That is going to be awesome. How do you set something like that up? will it drink from water bowls or does it have to be misted or does it even drink? How active are they? Does the one you are getting fly? I have never heard of anyone keeping them...

When I was kid, around 6, I found what I thought was a butterfly cocoon. Only to find out a few weeks later, was I found was a praying mantis egg sack. At least 500 ant sized mantis' were crawling out of the air holes of my "Hatch a Butterfly kit." I later released them in my yard. But, I've always wanted one of the colorful flower mimicking ones.

I looked on kingsnake, http://market.insecthobbyist.com/index.php?cat=5, no ads. :(

This looks like a good place though. http://www.mantisplace.com/mantisforsale.html

mantis_t2.jpg

dif site but that site sells this one. anyone know there life span?

I kept one when I was younger. I'm pretty sure all the local ones (I almost said native, haha) can fly, but not all do. Up in CT the Chinese were far more common, I think I only saw 1 or 2 Europeans in my life...I haven't seen one in Florida yet.

^ from the amount of research iv been doin this morning(not much) but it seems like some but not all are cannibalistic

Hi,awesome insects,I have kept them in the past and still I like them,be sure to keep some type of sponge in your water bowl to prevent it from drowning!

funnist part of this is right after i read this thread there was 2 young babys(little over 1") walkin on my front window. I couldnt resist. there is now 1 living in a 1.5g betta tank. will get pics. he is devowering flys.

TIP! use a fish tank net to catch house flys alive. Place the net in the freezer. when the fly hits the bottow of the freezer it will quickly make them dormant. they will appear dead. they are not. place them carefully in ur tank and in a few minutes they will wake up and begin to fly around. FOOD!!

i had a standard one for a while dont try to hold it these buggers are lightning fast.
