how big of pond?in ground?

It was 10x12 about 2-2.5 ft deep. Inground so that may have been the difference.

That sucks... probably too cold. Also they need feeding... not just what ever algae is in there.

ya noe....back where i lived before in Canada....with my 13'x8'x4' pond was made...we always talked about what we should do if its winter and freezing cold out side....we all thought of a way but we concluded with having a long ply wood to form a deck and place a roof on top where we cover every sq. inch of the roof with insulation to keep them warm.We do have a large under ground filter that is in my basement where the pipes of the intake and outtake tube runs over the ground which had a large heater in the filter which also heated the whole pond.We keep the pond water temperature at 84 degrees F. So you should have made something like that to insulate your pond to keep it warm.Plus you need a heater to conforatbly keep plecos as being a tropical fish. They can be in water as low as 65 degrees but its kinda a risk...so try keep your plecos and other in temperatures in the high 70's.

PS. Hope This Helps =)

oh yea pleco are really catfish....so they need to be fed many other assortments you can give them....not only algae...thats not good for long periods of their life time.Give pieces of pellets for catfish and they will eat those.Try stuffing them really up for those cold harsh winter weathers ok =]
