Im new and need some help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I posted before you said your dad is a carpenter. You can pick up 220g bare tanks cheap used if you look, and stands are easy and cheap to build for someone competent.
You can find directions in the DIY section.

There are also directions for building plywood tanks. Maybe look into that. :)

My silver aro grew about 10 inches in 3 months. I have him in a 55 gal till I'm done building my 430 gal, but his growth rate is staggering. I thought I'd have at least 6-8 months to finish my build, but now I know that I need to get it done sooner. This has definitely lighted a fire under my @$$.

Sorry to be crass, but no you haven't.

Arowanas get to 3ft+ as adults and very thick. A 65g is a 3ft long tank. A heathy adult arow would be longer than the tank and have issues turning around, even as agile as they are.

You may have seen a juvenile and assumed it was an adult. Or you didn't recognize that the fish was stunted or unhealthy.

Go look around the site at pictures of adults and note tank sizes they're in. You'll see that they couldn't possibly live healthy in a 65g long term. In fact there are plenty of pics also of rescued arowanas that have bent backs from being kept in too small a tank during growth.

This is a picture of my arow temporarily in a 50g during a move (same footprint as 65, just not as tall). He's only almost 6 months old here.

And adult arow would be the same length as that tank but much thicker and taller than the one pictured.

If you seriously think an adult could live in that long term, or a juvie could live in one for more than 6 months, given they will grow to 22" (almost 2/3 the length of the tank) in a year, I'm not sure what to say.

These fish are very active and almost never stop swimming. Footprint is VERY important since they will mainly be using the top of the tank and using it side to side and back to front rather than top to bottom.

ya like i said the 65 wouldn't be long term. do you still have rope fish? I love rope fish i had about a 15 inch one that got killed by my old cat fish.

No I don't :(.

I had 10 or 11, and some kind of disease that no one on here could even ID wiped them out within 3 days. They got dark raised blotches, swam erratically and died. Didn't effect the other fish in the tank. I'm not sure if it was a virus that lay dormant in the last one I added or something or what. They're all wildcaught so who knows what they could carry.
But it was heart breaking, so I haven't gotten anymore for fear it will happen again, although they're one of my favorite fish.
My biggest was about 15" too.
