More like the third post and it was actually a post made much earlier about how the pronunciation is up for grabs. The post I quoted was more recent and actually picked a pronunciation.

I am not questioning Ann information, But don't let us forget that the fish was known to the western science for the first time in Egypt by the french Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire some time between 1798-1801 They discovered genus Polypterus and its Nile species Polypterus bichir, And the fish is called( Besheer) in Egypt-where i live- in Arabic language -which is my native language.

And yes, I generally say "poly" more than anything else.
