I think that was in the second post :).
It was. I call them polypterus or polys, I find that it shortens the confusion period.

More like the third post and it was actually a post made much earlier about how the pronunciation is up for grabs. The post I quoted was more recent and actually picked a pronunciation.

Originally it is an Arabic word means : The bringer of good news it pronounced : BESHEER , It is used as a name in Southern Egypt and Sudan
The Sudan president called : Omar El (The) Besheer :D

Yes finally. Thank you Alexandrian.

I've always said biker because its easier even though I figured it might be more like bisheer. But if Anne's research says biker then thats gospel to me.

I am not questioning Ann information, But don't let us forget that the fish was known to the western science for the first time in Egypt by the french
Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire some time between 1798-1801 They discovered genus Polypterus and its Nile species Polypterus bichir, And the fish is called( Besheer) in Egypt-where i live- in Arabic language -which is my native language. :)

I've only heard it pronounced as Biker in my region. Also, Polypterus.

So it's besheer then? I've always said beecher or b!tcher...I'm surprised how many say biker.

And yes, I generally say "poly" more than anything else.
