LOL I suppose It depends on what fish you're keeping....I hope one wouldn't keep a BGK under those conditions, for example........that would be torture.;)

I believe fish need some hiding places to chill when stressed set up territories and structure to break up lines of site to reduce aggression, and in general to provide a more natural enviroment. If you want your fish to have more swimming space buy a bigge tank.

Ive been playing around with this on some of my tanks and found if I give fish lots of hiding places they tend to frighten easy and like to hide but if I give them a plant or two they seem to be more interactive as they get older. I guess it all depends on the tank and and stock but sometimes if there is nothing to break up the line of vision it could get ugly.

Howdy,

I don't believe in completely bare tanks except for extreme open-water fish. A bit of decor gives fish shelter and a feeling of security. And: IMO it looks a bit better if there's more than just water and glass. But to each his own.

anybody got any pics of their bare tanks?
Here are pics of two Monstertanks that I keep substrate-free but planted. The second tank is actually a bit too crowded for me ... it's more "storage" than "show". But if you decide to go bare, make sure you have serious biofiltration.

im so sick of my tank looking crowded and none of my fish swimming that 3 weeks ago i pulled all the deco out except 2 pieces of driftwood. they adjusted after bout a week so today i removed the driftwood. now theres gravel only. anybody else keep basically bare tanks and how does it affect the fish that like to hide (cats, plecos,ck's, etc...). im shure they adapt.

anybody got any pics of their bare tanks?

25 months ago, my husband found a dirty 55 gal. tank at a yard sale that was chock full of big fish:

We had to take out the log cave, because our big boys were scraping themselves on it. Once we learned about the nitrogen cycle, we were doing 60 - 100% water changes daily, to keep the nitrates below 20ppm. We were spending close to 1 1/2 hours every day just vacuuming out the feces and changing the water. The 15" pacu had to turn around in a 12" wide tank. My husband was adamant that the new tank be low maintenance. The tank is bare floor and void of any decoration (the fish are decoration enough). It has worked out better than we had hoped--in 18 months, there has been no debris or feces to vacuum out of the tank. We have a low maintenance tank, and the fish have a good home. We don't think our tank looks bad:

:)im guessing the bottom tank is not the 55.to the original post,i think if the fish in the wild likes to hide, then give it hiding spots ,have other fish that dont hide as much maybee some dithers and when Mr shy comes out it will be a treat.they should not have to get used to not feeling secure and im not sure they ever will.we cant play god too much, remember we are doing this for the fish too.im not bashing you,its just my opinion.thanks.

Howdy,

Gravel houses great amounts of beneficial bacteria, it is the "second liver" of the aquarium and makes up a huge fraction of biofiltration. If that's gone, your filter has be to capable of double-duty.

Sorry for the another Newb Q but if thats the case should you limit the Gravel vacing to keep the bio in there??

Thanks,
Brett

what about adding some dither fish like silver dollers or danios or something, with them swimming around it should give your fish the "all is clear message" and make them not feel like they need to hide all the time.
