im sick of this noise!!! overflow questions!! suggestions please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
but thats even worse looking than just the pipe. i want to do a triangle ovrflow box to hide the pipe and so its blck and looks a little better or just plug the hole and get a hang on box and eliminate the pipe all together. i think it would make the tank look bigger

well thats a whole seperate issue and not what this thread was about lol :) gotta find some black acrylic and build yourself an overflow box. then use the Durso inside

i think thats what im goin to do :)
n dont you tell me what my thread is about :irked: :D
thanks for the durso suggestion. seems like a pretty popular thing
do you have one? pics?

you cant derail your own thread haha ;)

yeah i use them in all my tanks now, i love them! dont have any pics, but you can see the top of the Durso standpipe in the video i posted on the first page. you can see how quiet and gentle the flow is

I'm just gonna hang it out there with a dumb question for the pro's.
Couldn't you "just" restrict the flow of the drain ?
I'm pretty sure this is what jcardona1 has been trying to say.

What does a Durso do that a correctly sized or throttled drain won't.

Is a Durso nothing more than a bandaid for a poorly engineered drain ?

I'm just askin'.

yeah sorta. the answer isnt so cut n dry though. a durso will raise the water level in the overflow box. it also cuts down on most of the gurgling of the drain pipe by having the elbow pointing down with the vent hole up top.

restricting the flow of the drain however, is a little more risky. by doing this, youre essentially running your drain line at 100% capacity. any small item could get clogged in the partially closed valve and flood your tank. it also acts weird if the water level in your tank changes, like if you pull out a big piece of driftwood or put one in. the drain line that is running at 100% capacity wont be able to adjust for those changes in water level, it will just stay that way until you adjust it.

i went this route because im injecting co2 into the tank and needed to reduce all splashing and gurgling. thats why i have a Durso pipe and a restricted drain line.

im pretty sure one or though would give pretty much the same results...

You had me convinced , all the way up to here:

I'll have to read your answer over morning coffee. :)

 gotta read the part before about co2 injection. i cant afford to be gassing that stuff, so i need it dead calm

PM coming. Thanks Jose.

do you know if i can just paint the durso pipe black?
