stage 1) use multiple smaller heaters.....if one fails you have a lot more time to react......
stage 2) use an overall master thermostat to cut power in the event of overheating and an alarm for hi or low

I got and 300 watt Aqueon for a Xmas present and noticed that it came with a lifetime warranty.
I have noticed that several manufacturers are now giving lifetime warranties on their heaters. I was wondering if something like this happens to their product if they would warranty the fish lost also. As I have never had this happen, ( and hopefully never do )
it raised my curiousity.

Wow! Bad news. I lost all my Discus and tank mates when the heater went into overdrive and cooked them. Fitted an alarm but no goof if your out at work and it goes off.

There was a thread on longest lasting heaters, and Ebo Jager kept coming up, I would (and have) look into that brand. (I own several now, and they're great)

(What is a MASTER THERMOSTAT)?
I would like to know what a master thermostat is as well? because I had heater malfunction as well when I went home thanksgiving break.
My roomate got back first and almost puked from the smell when he entered the house, as his eel was now cooking and rotting in the tank it was in, and the water was now around 95. Somehow my fish in there survived, gasping at the top for air, a few hours later and I think they would have been done for too.

by the way, you shouldn't do water changes too often. when u do that, yes you remove all bad bacterias, but you also remove good ones that help you keep your water clean by consuming amonia and other bad stuff. its not good to always start over your natural cycle.
of course, that all depends on the quatity of water you change... but i think you should wait at least a week and do 30% water change max.
