African Cichlids in a ten or five?

Max

they are the 1's from walmart that get like 4". 6" max and they would be back in the 55 when they are bigger if i dont just keep them in to see wat happens

Your going to get flamed for saying that:irked:. Yes put them together and see how it goes
ummm dude hes putting them in a 55g there is no way these 2 fish will tolerate each other for more than fist few months.

I dont see why I would be flamed for being responsible. It isnt healthy for the fish to be constantly under stress. Jack Dempseys have the name of a famous boxer for a reason....Green Terrors and Jack Dempseys are awesome to have, but never together; Especially in a 55g tank

the combo would work in a larger tank but for two large fish that have the potential of being quite aggressive in a 55g wont work long term, especially with a few africans thrown in the mix.

there are very few definite "never" and "always" statements with cichlids; a lot of time the best answer is "maybe"

that being said, it is very fair to say that keeping GT and JD together is at best problematic, and if you put two of them in a 55G, I would put my money at about 80-20 that it wouldn't work long-term, but that doesn't mean there aren't exceptions . . .

for myself, I kept a GT and JD together in a 90G for about a year; ultimately, the JD asserted himself and the GT spent more time hiding than swimming or eating, so somebody had to go . . . the JD stayed, the GT went back to the LFS

I would think there is a pretty good chance it could work. I have severums in with a red terror and a carpintes

I had a 55 that had a jd and gt never had problems, but the gt died. Then I upgaded to my current 90 still have the same jd and 4 months ago picked up a gt no probs. Maybe my jd likes gt'ers but she dont like my jag. lol

Never say never! Fish agression can vary greatly.. I say go for it.
Getting both when small does help, you can also keep an eye and see how things go.
The tank size will probably be an issue, if you can get a bigger one then I would when they get bigger. You can also try re-arranging the tank when you add the new fish so if the current fish doesn't think he is being invaded.

If you don't mind losing a JD/GT and don't mind wasting money try it. I would say chances are it won't work. Fish aggression is strange and inconsistent at best.

My JD swims with Catfish and FM's without a problem. Put an Oscar in the mix and he went wild, same with a Pleco. He hates larger sized fish, killing them whenever he has the chance, but won't touch smaller fish like the FM's.
