My thoughts too. Don't forget, Location location, location. Plus what the others have said.

Stole the words right outta my mouth...its all about location when it comes to a business like that. Higher traffic areas will see more sales. I used to work for a Petland and most of our customers were people walking by that just happened to see the store and were lured in by the animals on display.

for the love of god dont sell pacus and rtcs and other large fish to ppl that have no clue as to what they are getting into-make things like those special order only.

cant agree more with that statement... its amazing how many of these you see at the lfs's and almost all of them dont get the home they need.

these might be alittle earliy for considering this but its something that ive noticed over time and that is lfs with air driven filter on tanks and all the water seperate appear to have less disease than stores with all the tanks water connected on one system. makes it very difficult to treat disease if you wanted. anyone else notice this?

Just remember, most small businesses fail because of lack of good business skills, and actually less to do with the related trade. Do your research.

If you are really serious, look into how much you will have to pay for a location, water / electric bills, employees, ect. Separate yourself from the other fish stores in your area where it be by price, location, quality of fish, service, or type of fish.

Dont get dyed fish in the stock such as Fruit tetra, "I lov u" parrots and painted balloon mollies etc.

and examine the feeder orders! Don't let Mosquitofish, Gouramis, and Bluegills get through and end up inside a TSN and dont sell to anyone who smells funny and says "Hah men wut fishes u get...?"
and dont sell TSN to guys with a 5 gallon fishbowl

The right Attitude/outlook is a must.

Except there are already feeder mosquitofish in some LFS, but good idea to check out some conimants in feeder tanks such as bluefins, sunfish, bullheads, tetras, killifish, crayfish, etc. Reseach the fish/aquatic critters species before order them, so you can know what they needs and what they suppose to eat what you have (peters elephantnose fish likes bloodworms and black worms while dragon goby's really picky eaters but they are not fish eaters).
