I'm the WORST at applying BACKGROUNDS... HELP ME!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sounds good then. Thanks for all the advice, Bob.

Clean the glass good with alchohol before applying the paint. I prefer a roller but a brush will work. Be prepared to put a few coats on.

won't painting make the back ground wrinkly? i'd like to try it though if is flat and shinny, i use the plastic blue background, and while doing it somehow.....a huge black thingy that looks like patch of hair got in to the back, though is hard to see it, but i can't do much about it now that the thing has settle and pulling it out would have made lots of air bubbles

Painting should always turn out looking perfect as long as you put enough coats of paint on it.

You only see the imperfections on the backside of the tank. Like LowCel said, if it is thick enough, it will look good.

It seems like every time I put on a background there are pockets of air and bubbled out spaces that I just can't smooth away for the life of me. I'm about to set up a 72 bowfront and really want to make sure I get it right the first time. It must be the way that I go about laying it out and taping it down.

Please... this probably sounds stupid but give me some pointers! How do you get the perfect smoothness/flatness of a background?

just spray paint it black.

after i got sick of stupid background paper i just painted it black. And i'll never go back to backgrounds again

i use weed blocker membrane and just tape it to the bottom of the top rim. it takes about 2 minutes to do, its easy and it looks great!

weed blocker membrane is water proof, so it does NOT warp or wrinkle, ever, even when water gets on it.

painting it is the best option, but its the most work.

heres what the weed blocker membrane looks like and heres it on one of my tanks.

its easier and quicker to use vinyl sticker. make sure you clean the glass then just spray some water (diluted with little soap) to glass and sticker, then apply the sticker. to take out air bubble use small squegee (sp?) take no longer than 5 minutes and no mess at all :)
