I'm thinking about pulling the divider!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In my experience with grammodes for close to a year now is that a divider makes their aggression towards the fish on the other side worse. My pair was divided from my istlanum and all they wanted to do was get had him and when i had my other grammodes divided from them he some how got to the other side and the pair destroyed him. I sold the istlanum took the divider and introduced dithers wiith only 2 out of the 5 getting killed. After keeping dithers with them i started adding some new cichlids and right now i keep a geo, pike, and red devil with my pair and they are fine now. My grammodes are fed 3-4 times a day to keep them full and i keep my temp at 77 and it seems to have calmed them down some. The are called the mini dovii for a reason and i strongly believe if they were able to grow a lil faster and a little bigger they could be a top predator cichlid.

It didn't work then and it won't work later, the tank is too small for those two aggressive cichlids... I wouldn't try it again, if you are going to get a larger tank wait until you get the larger tank and then try them together perhaps with other cichlid and or dithers in the tank.

Your wrong if you think it will be better to keep them separated until they are in a bigger tank. If anything it will be a much better chance if i continue to introduce them and try to get them used to each other. So when they do move to the bigger tank they already have a established relationship. Just because "it didn't work" for the first 5 minutes does NOT mean it wont work for life, nor does it mean that it will work. You have to wait and see.

How is there "nothing to gain". I gain a beautiful tank with two very cool fish swimming freely throughout it with no ugly divider between them. I get to see them interact with each other in the confines of my own home. I will always do everything in my power make sure my fish are healthy happy and fins in tact.

...please check back in with an update in a year.

Something tells me that the istlanum and grammodes won't both be "in tact"...

Matt

Maybe, but it is worth a shot to me. Not like it has not been done before, or something similar. We all know having any type of aggressive cichlid in a community setting is hit or miss when it comes to them living peacefully in a community setting.

I think to make it work you will need more fish to divide the aggression up but a bigger tank is needed
