I like the idea of a salt 220...just don't do it half-assed, which for some reason seems to be the way "monster-fish" FW people do marine...

 I'm sorry but thats true, lol.

i say you stick with mainly fresh but also get some more salt, not to far into fresh not to far into salt, right in the middle

Well I bought a 75gal for marine..............but I want something bigger.

then by all means get a big SW setup, use the 75 for the rpbs hen they get bigger :D

i would go with the 75gal... and make that salt.. once you have that set up for awhile and you really like it.. then buy another 220gal for salt.. go slow... and make decisions that will last into the future.

I've been planning a big salt tank for awhile now. It will probably be shorter than the 220. That's the only thing I want different. I'm thinking 72L x 24 or 36D x 24 T. Around 180 or 270. I like the idea of a deeper tank with a shorter height, especially for marine.

i like that too.. infact that was the only thing i did not like about the 220gal i had before it exploded .. was that it was so deep.. hard to do water changes and bottom cleaning.. so thats a smart idea..

I would keep the 220 as fresh, and buy a 120 or 180g reef tank. something 24" wide because you need the width for live rock.

thats one of my hobby goals, to setup a 120g reef tank one day. I have looked after them for years at the LFS when I worked there, yet never set one up at home. I just have a little 65g salt with fish only..

I feel your pain. I made my sand a tad higher than normal, dumb idea. I'm 6'3 but I have REALLY short arms, so i can barely reach the bottom standing on something.

The problem I keep running into is that when I wanna go wide, they go tall too. I dont want anything over 2' tall EVER again. It's a pain to clean and most of the time wasted space. I've been going back and forth on ordering a custom glass from somewhere.

have one salt (55 column reef) and setting up a 110 tall salt (love the depth) for lionfish n such....i vote go salt, so many cool fish with color...and of course there's lionfish. so i vote buy another 220 and go salt with it (best of both worlds 220 of each)

just find a good deal on rock 'cuz that'd be an expensive start-up..

on a side note why don't many mfk'rs do marine? there are true monsters in saltwater but they seem to go mostly ignored. i say it's cuz of people's false perceptions of SW being "sooo hard"

I say if you have the money to run two large tanks, one fresh and one salt, without really putting any dents in the monthly income, then why not... as long as you aren't sacrificing any of your necessities in life, i don't see much problem with running another large tank...
