im thinking of buying a fire eel? help please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
erm... i dunno do they shred fish like snakeheads or would it only eat fish that are small enough to fit in theyre mouth if they were well fed would it take chunks out of the eel/ME and would it still be safe to hand feed my eel?

no one else... BUMP

they would need a 55 gallon plus tank, with hiding spots for coverage, and an intake guard.

Safe when it is small, when matured, mabye a feeding tong would be the best.

i think i know what i want for my tank (geez, FINALLY) 1: fire eel, 1:red spotted severum 4: silver $'s and 1: senagal bichir but i reckon my eel will mistake it for an eel and kill it, i think so anyway? might it kill it?! and if so i might just get a syno p.s. i dont think i want a mega monster carnivore with big nashers just yet...

i don't think it will as long as the eel and bichir r the same size. my bigger eel monty is about 17" and he is going to be with a 5" bichir.

I just honestly hope you're not planning for the 100 gallon tank to be it's permanent home. I also hope that your dad does not think it will be suitable for any kind of aro. 6'x2'x2' is what is generally expected as minimum for either of the 2 aforementioned fish.

I keep 2 sens with my tire track eel atm.. they're all about the same size.. and the tire track isn't the naughty one. That will likely change as he outgrows the Sens and once he's about 24" to their 12" chances are I'll have to seperate them. may not have too.. but... might.. a fire eel is gonna outgrow a sen real quick.. expect a 1" a month growth on it until it hits about 24" or that seems to be when they slow down. My 3 are getting beastly..

pk705 no he knows that a jardini will not stay in there for life and i can see him upgrading in 6months... maybe even a year so no i will be getting the 100gal if he does upgrade the pearl aro is being purchased today in the fact that its only 4" at the moment and all of our wonderous fish are not even past more than 4-5" he has got a large enough tank and IF we feel that a fish is cramped then we will hand it in and not leave it to stunt its growth in a small tank and to be perfectly honest i think that are little fishy pals dont need to have its exact tank size for them straight away i mean who puts a 2" tinfoil barb in a 75 gal+ tank where it can be perfectly happy in a 40 gal for 4-5months?:nilly: also it is very difficult to buy numerous freakin tanks when this crappy little country has hit a huge freakin recession which... undoubtebly is heading for the states!

Fire eels and most of the Mastacembelus eels for that matter are mellow and reserved fish they wont attack or 'shred' fish although they will eat a fish if they can get it into their mouth.

i may just keep it as a species tank btw i seen a pic of a fish and i finally found out what this random fish fish is, it's a Payara(Vampire Tetra) and i have just been convincing myself that i can have one in a year but it's not going in with the eel but... I WANT A RED TAIL PAYARA google image it they're true monster fish at a foot long in captivity. so screw pirhana lovers this thing would pwn them to extinction !!!:hitting:
Theres plenty of good information on Payara in the charcains sections. They are quite sensitive to poor water quality and need plenty of oxygen in their water. Hydrolocus tatauaia is very agressive and dont plan on having many tankmates with it either. And they are very rare over here ive never seen any in over 4 yrs and i shop for monsters like these in my time ive only ever actually seen 2 Scomberoides in the shops.
