1st question .... How big should the Tank be?

2nd question .... Where would you recommend I buy the Oscars and how many?

3rd question .... Who would make good tank mates?

I'm not an expert on breeding...but I think you would want the tank to be fairly large, say 300 gallons. Reason being is I think you will need to get several Oscars to let them pair up. Get say 6 to see if some will pair up. I don't think tankmates would be ideal if you want to keep the eggs/fry.

If I wanted to breed a pair of O's I'd go for a 180g tank at the minimum but likely even bigger. They may do it in less but the more comfortable they are the better the odds they'll breed.

I would keep nothing with them, as it could inhibit them breeding.

Jeff Rapps had some wild O's last I checked. I'd get 6 or so, in hopes of getting one pair to bond. Then sell the rest or put them in other tanks.

Thanks for the Feedback guys, so no pleco's or cats to do clean up work in the tank?

I got 5 F1 Peru oscars from Jeff Rapps at about 2". I put them in a 4' 120gal bare bottom with some decoratins and when they got a little bigger a pleco and a yellow bull head catfish. Almost a year later I pulled 3 of the oscars out at about 8" becasue 2 were showing signs of pairing. I have those 2 in the 120 still alone and they have not spawned yet but they definetly seem like they will. It got a little rough once or twice with aggression but nothing that really bad. A 6' 125 would have been better but the 4x2x2 worked for me. I kept it bare bottom so waterchanges were easy...drain and fill.

Here are some older thread that have pics when they were younger and when I got them from Jeff.

Also wanted to note F1 mean the parents were wild...FO are wild. And if Wild oscars breed they are still wild..the babies are not there F1.

I had them in a 90 tall for a very short while. I feel that 90 tall would have been too small to pull it off.

If they're bred in captivity they're no longer "wild," by definition.

??? The parents are no longer wild-caught once they breed? Or are you referencing the obvious as to the fry?
