Rule of thumb, if you ever have to ask if it's a FH, it's probably a FH. If you get a Trimac from a reputable supplier, you should have no worries. LFS's usually never carry pure Trimacs.
rule of thumb is one thing but no way a trimac looks just like a FH in every way, im not lookin for a trimac i am just wanting to know for personal ID experience. because those are 2 fish i know nothing about
and i was wondering if it has to do with color or what because i saw something called a golden trimac and it looked just like a FH so i am still a bit confused
ZZ flowerhorns are basically fancy trimacs. look up a picture of one and you will see.
This only applies to zz flowerhorns though... as they have the head spot of a trimac. A most basic zz will be a trimac crossed with a lyonsi and will have additional black spots in the "flower" row... whereas trimacs only have three round circular spots which are ocelli. (hence the name trimac=3 spot). A trimac does not have blue spots either, as this comes from the texas cichlid. Most zz's these days are so called "red dragon" which means they inherrit the trait of red head from vieja synspilum and the "kok" gene from red devils- these can have water kok... something trimacs do not have either. Basically low quality zz flowerhorns you can treat like trimacs... but no other kind. and there are quite a few easy ways to tell what is a flowerhorn
* correction. trimacs can have more spots than three... but what I meant was the trait in a ZZ flowerhorn most usually is more pronounced ala lyonsi cichlids.
I did not notice that about the pictures... but yes... although some trimac based flowerhorns do not grow the kok of a midas and some do have upturned mouths. here is one of my young zzs with an upturned mouth
The distinguishing features in this one are as follows...
1. the more pronounced flower line... from what i have seen timacs have mostly black markings down their side and lyonsi have more pronounced black markings surrounded in turquoise like this guy does
2. the blue "pearl" spots. these are a result of this guy having some texas blood in him.
3. you cant see it in this pic but he is a full red dragon... his body would later be covered with pink and then red.
4. I have also never seen a natural trimac or lyonsi with the "tear" marking... though I do think this is probably a result of line breeding timac x lyonsi sports.
