I think you did the right thing. Suffocating is probably better than being eaten alive by piranhas.

I took him out and ended it quick....with a knife. I couldn’t watch him suffer in the tank or suffocate

So unfortunate news:
Despite the fact he seemed to be recovering, while I was away from the tank (for less than 10 mins) thinking of a way to make a makeshift qt tank with things I have around the house, the other 6 got to him. I think when they saw him swimming erratically, they were watching him at one point just laying on his side and knew he was weak. When I looked in the tank, he had been attacked pretty badly, bite marks EVERYWHERE and his rear fin was barely holding on to the rest of his body. I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving him in there to suffer and get finished off so I took him out of the tank and did it myself. It’s just a fish but it was so damn heartbreaking. Ugh....and then there was six....

Sorry for ur loss bro.. .I’m late in seeing ur post but...have a divider ready since u dont have any QT tank for future use just in case this happens again.. u can just divide a small portion of the tank for the sick one... that’s how piranhas are, the moment they sense weakness they take advantage..

Pick up one of the black tuff totes with a yellow lid. They sell them at most hds Lowes Menards. Air pump and a sponge maybe a small heater if room temp isn't enough. Less then $50 for a good hospital tank.

Home Depot has them for $16 and a big one at that.. u can prolly make 2-3 dividers out of it.. oh wire cutter is best to cut it to size. Good luck
