Immidiate Help~ Ammonia disaster... gravel to sand conversion failure ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When you get water tested get it all tested. I'm at a loss as to why Steve @ petworld would think your water is fine...nitrite levels would be low if your not processing the ammonia.

Quit adding stuff untill you have some type of idea on what is going on . You need a base line to start from. Keep a record of everything and know what reactions different chemicals/treatments have by themselves/with each other.

What lit testin experiment?

Starting a new thread won't help you either, everyone can see this one.

Fee d your fish, there already stressed enough.

Thank you all for the help and advices

Ya, I didnt know why Steve didnt measure the ammonia....

I did keep record of everything ( I just dont have all the data when i am at work, i ususally reply the post at the company)... I didnt add everything all at a same time...

My experiment was :

As you know, I did total 3 times of water change like eveyone suggested. Supposely, the water should be NEW and low ammonia in my tank (a matured tank). However, I noticed that everytime I did a waterchange.. the ammonia "raised" in the tank, which is not making any sense to me.
I quit doin w/c and adding stuff into water (just kinda wait). Then I tested my tab water quality(the water i used for w/c). The test result for my tab water showed that it contained 2.5 ppm ammonia !!! That is even HIGHER than wut i hab in my tank~ SCARY...
To prove that there is high ammonia containing in the tab water of my area... I drove abt 3 miles to my friend's house and I tested his tab water... the result was the same~ very HIGH Ammonia... I even asked my gf to do a water test be4 and after she did w/c (30% ), and she had same conculsion.... plz keep that in mind here, I am the guy who realli believes in water change will do our tank good, and I still believe it. So, I am not arguing that w/c is a bad idea.... I just want to share this info to everyone here ( seeing many ppl say their tab water is free of ammonia) and someone may educate me to do a correct w/c.

Here is the test result of my tab water: PH 6.8, Ammo 2.5 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm, Nitrate, 0 ppm

Anyway, my water now seems fine... everything is perfect, ammonia 0 ppm..
I tested it yesterday, and I also brought one sample to Tiki's... he said it's fine..

Another test in this morning (2/23/07)... PH 6.8, Ammo 0 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm

I will moniter it for another few more days... i think it's fine now...

Steve at petworld test my water... he didnt test the ammonia... but he said my nitrite is safe... so he believes that my water should be fine... However, his kit shows that i hab high nitrate, which is very weird ( Nitrate should usually be removed by water change) .... with all the water change I did.. plus filters and chemical.... i am confused abt the result. I see most ppl on the forum dont have this problem when they convert from gravels to bare bottom or sand......

i tested it few hrs ago.... the ammonia does come down .... i cant realli tell from the kit... i guess it's around 0~0.25 , however this result is measured after i dump in a lot of AmQuel (Ammo remover).... Therefore, i am not sure abt the water stability.... I will measure again once i got home.....
now, ph 6.8 , Ammo ~0.15, Nitrite 0~1 ppm, Nitrate 250 ppm....

I will bring my water to another lfs tomorrow ... i will keep u guys updated...

I have a steve at my petworld too! lol.

Glad to hear it. Have you contacted your local water/utility company (whatever they call it there), Mopst of them will tell you and/or send you a printout of the water standarts for your area. It may help some day.

Oh, and it's tap water not tab :D

Good luck,
