Impacts of fishkeeping/mental health

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep a 3-4 minute video of my home tank on my phone. Break it out and leave it play on my office desk occasionally. Very relaxing. The really funny part is I have a tank in my office as well. ?
It's okay to have a favorite tank!!

I know I do.

If the day ever comes that I don't get upset at the loss of a fish, then I hope that I do the right thing and stop keeping fish altogether. It's been roughly 50 years since my first aquarium and I'm not at that point yet; I don't want to ever get there.

Keeping fish has really helped with my seasonal depression. Winters can be long, hard, and never ending. Heck, we have snow on the ground right now?
Keeping tanks has given me something to focus on. An ecosystem alive and thriving despite the temperature outside.
Though today I’m dealing with a tank that sprung a leak, or it’s a filter that started leaking. I haven’t figured out what happened yet. I caught it early, only about 5g leaked to the floor. But I do worry that the stand maybe compromise now. And debating on if I should just go ahead with a reseal either way. Ugh....

Sorry to hear about the tank. I guess what I'm getting at is the tanks help me with being Bipolar. I'm learning that it's okay to get help and share this side of life.

This is the price you pay for that "buffer" of more water.

I have 5g mini aquariums and 150gs, so I get to deal with both.

I think the pros outweigh the cons in this hobby for sure. The downside of problems you can't figure out, fish you love dying and maintenance when you can't be bothered are one thing but the satisfaction of having a successful good looking tank, raising fish from young to adult or fish breeding are worth the effort. There's also the social aspect, getting to know the crew at the LFS or even talking to people from all around the world here on MFK.
Lots of things in this filthy world can impact mental health , any hobby should be an escape from normal life but it does take time, effort and work to truly get the results. Generally the payoff is worth the hassle in the end.

It’s just part of the hobby. Water leaks are going to happen eventually.

And asking for help only makes you stronger, in any area of life. ?
