some more:

Aquarium setup: Ctenolucius hujeta (Freshwater Barracuda) requires a large aquarium tank. The aquarium should be densely planted in the back and along the sides but still provide plenty of open space in the center of the aquarium for the fish to swim on. They are excellent jumpers and a well covered aquarium is a necessity. They seldom grow to their full length in aquariums. This species is best kept in schools.

Feeding: Ctenolucius hujeta (Freshwater Barracuda) can be hard to feed and often only accepts live food of suitable size. Some specimens can be thought to eat dead food but most Ctenolucius hujeta (Freshwater Barracuda) will only taste it and spit it back out.

Breeding: Ctenolucius hujeta (Freshwater Barracuda) breeding is hard but possible. Keep one male with two females in a large aquarium. Condition them well before trying to get them to spawn. An increase in the temperature seems to help trigger spawning. The temperature might have to be raised a little above their normal temperature span (22-26°C / 72-79°F) This species is very productive and one spawning can result in more then 1000 small Ctenolucius hujeta (Freshwater Barracuda).

remember this fish is a predator and coils itself into a characteristic "S" shaped position then springs forward to catch its prey in a powerful lunge. The upper jaw moves up and down just as the lower jaw does. Once prey is secured in the fish's mouth, it juggles it into position (headfirst) and swallows it. In the wild these fish often hunt in small packs near the surface and devour many other shoaling fish. Indeed, they are best described as Gar-like in most respects.

best to keep with fish as payaras and other large predatory characins...

hope this helps:D

Way to go Portuguese Monster Fish Keeper!!!:)

Howdy,

chill. I think Del was the first one to inform you what "gar" you bought (in his own way), and he said it's nice. You should be more appreciative. Especially considering that you bought a fish without knowing its requirements. That is frowned upon, for good reasons ... We've all done it, though ...

You already got some good info here. Try out our search option, and you'll find tpons more

Happy fishkeeping,
HarleyK

i had one it got to about 6" is about 3, 4 months then slowed down. not to picky of an eater. mine was fine with all kinda tank mates. i think it is bc i had him since he was 2", but i heard if u get one bigger they might be aggressive to some tank mates. but they are a cool fish. most pet stores label them as a gar of some sort. when i 1st got into more rare fish and stuff i thoght it was some type of tropical gar lol. dont sweat it. nice fish tho and :welcome: to MFK
