importance of culling

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
dang, those FM look great! I had a pair of F1, and I culled. I saw some grown up F2, and they looked FABULOUS!!! I miss my male :(

interesting did you pick FMs with the best color to breed each time ?

Thats also the reason i like wild caught fish nature eliminates all the weak for you if you get a fish over 4''-5'' or bigger you know its got good genes

Just to clarify, culling is ridding your lines of the undesirable fish - not saving the most desirable fish.

We used to but humankind stopped leaving things to nature a long time ago.

That's why I could never breed! :(
Breeding fish and winding up with 40... two keep to and kill the rest! I don't see why the ones with a little more coloring are the only ones with value, and why all the others have to die just cause their not the right color, its not like they are not healthy! Whay not sell the "undesired fish"? I would of been happy to buy any of those beautiful "undesired" fish! :(
But then I guess I don't understand because I keep fish as pets, not ornaments that have to be "perfect" so I can show them off to people....

Ya good colors and so tend to indicate good health and genes... but culling its not like doing natures job of killing "the weak" either... if that were the case parrot fish would not exist, nor would fancy goldies, and bettas would be WAAAAAY less colorful... but could actually swim instead of slowly draging a ridiculous sized tail... human criterias for "perfection" are not necessarily nature's (heck look at Chihuauas! XD )

For anyone who wishes to breed fish and be a part of conservation, I link you to this thread...

All the fish in red are in danger of becoming extinct in the near future, but we as hobbyists can get involved and save some of these fish!

If you own any of the fish on the list you should register with Claudia and join the team to continue to conserve the species.

That is great, hopefully more people can involved in breeding threatened fish species
