Thay are doing a study at Oklahoma State University on Gater Gar , soon as i get a chance we can find out how old she was.
I have been Bowfishing for over 30 years, and taken my fair share of large gar. with that said, bowfishing and fishing for gar dont have much of an inpact on the gar as a whole, its gill nets, Falcon lake is shared between Texas and Mexico, one Gill net can kill more gar in one night than i could kill in a whole year if i tryed hard all year, i have pulled nets up over 100 yards, thay are illeagle on the US side but that doesnt stop them.
Another problem is that Mexico pulls so much water out of that lake at times you can drive 1/4 mile from the boat ramp to where the water line starts, and it seams to happen around breeding time, so the eggs dont have a chance. Gar meat sells for $5.00 a pound around their.
And with all this I have never seen so many gar over 100#, .
with my 1000.gal tank i want to put some short nose , 1 long nose , cant wait. no gater gar unless i can find a tank to transport it to when it gets to big, might be fun to see how long that takes?
