As well, any pics I have looked at in books or the net, I haven't been able to find one with red on the dorsal.

I might be mistaken and simply not have looked at enough pictures. Some of the juvies, listed as C. sp. "venuzuela" in the sticky, Identification Thread, show red on the dorsal. Might be a variation with in or between populations and not a distinguishing characteristic at all. I know my C. sp. "venuzuela" never had any red on it's dorsal, even as a juvie. I guess once the fish loses it's juvie color and pattern, you should have a better idea what it is, for sure.

Both my juvie venezuelans had red in the dorsal fin.

Def looks like a ven to me. My biggest ven is about a year old, and is currently about 12-13" long. Seems to have really slowed down at the 12" mark, so it would take a while to outgrow your tank, depending on how big your tank is.

No doubt a lugubris-Type pike. All juvies of this group tend to look very similar. But in all these pictures of your pike it apears to have red on the dorsal fin. Sort of doubt it's a C. sp. "venuzuela" as many years ago I owned one, and it never pocessed any red on the dorsal fin , as a juvie or an adult. As well, any pics I have looked at in books or the net, I haven't been able to find one with red on the dorsal.

My guess would be C. strigatta, as all pictures of juvies I have seen show red on the dorsal. Once your fish is older, and looses it's juvie pattern, it might become more obvious what species you have. Here's a link to a picture of a juvie C. strigatta:

Maybe I'll hang on to him for a few months and see what he turns out like... either way though if it is a lugubris, I won't have room for him... :(

Venny all day!!

Very commen but get big fast, lots a personality, and a great fish!!

Here's a pic of the juvie ven I used to have. The red on the dorsal is clearly apparent.
