went to the walmart today... i cant help checking out their fish (even though most of the time i can tell they dont take care of their fish very well) :( .

they have been carrying alot of baby senegals lately. they are way too cute :) tonight when i was checking them out, one stood out to me. it had some color and markings in the pectoral, tail, and dorsal finlets. it even had some unusual speckels on the head. looked like a pretty unique looking senegal soooooo bam $6.49 and i have myself a new baby :)

here are some pics.
my camera sucks... and i dont know how to use it that well :) the flash washed out some of the colors but you can still see the markings good enough i think.

WOW, if I didnt have to work in the morning I would go hit up the ole' 24/7 Walmart to see if they have any of these babies! There is always after work........? Maybe pickup that guys used tank too.............

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think what you have is a P. senegalus! I'm counting the dorsal finlets and a P. senegalus must have between 8-11 (usually 9). In your third picture I can count only 6 finlets! That would most likely put your bichir in the "palmas group", probably P.palmas or P.polli. Additional finlets do not grow as the bichir gets larger. Also that spotting on the dorsal half will probably develope into a faint banding with time.

I agree. the finlets start furthur back on the palamas, good eye.

Indeed very good eye! I agree. Would be interesting to see how this one grows out. Great buy anyway!

Wow what a cutie. Now I am going to have to scour the local walmarts. One of them half way between here and Daytona always has something unique. They had baby senegals one time and I also bought two Spring Hill Loaches there. (very hard to find in Florida because all fresh water rays are banned.)

unique little guy! the overall coloration looks like a senegalus, but with some unique features. i guess we just have to wait for it to grow. btw i wouldn't rule out its a unique senegal just because its dorsal finlets count is outside the typical range.

The chances that this is a pure bred senegalus is zero! As stated above it has way too few finlets and they start past the mid-length area of the body! At best it could be a senegalus hybrid.
