In a pickle

Lol yeah that would be the best solution to get another tank but I'm running out of space! I might just have to get 40 g breeder and grow some small ornates out and prolong my decision lol

you could do that, grow them to 8 inches then throw them in with your other fish, they should leave the ornates alone.. but never know, a 40 breeder should be big enough for one ornate and a senegal.

This is a hard question to ask because only you can really answer it for yourself. Take a look at the things you like best about your jag and what you will like best about a bichir, then try to make a decision based on that.

You could also go for another tank, but if you don't have room for a 90+ gallon (I think that is what a bichir would need to live comfortably), then you are going to have to make the decision.

Someone commented on how common jags are becoming and I agree there. If you make the switch to bichirs, but want to go back to jags, they are becoming increasingly easy to find. At the very least one of your local stores should be able to order one in for you if they don't already carry them.

I am not a particular fan of either jags or bichirs, but if I had to choose, I think the bichir would be more fun to have. But that is mostly because I prefer mildly aggressive or peaceful fish to the more aggressive cichlids.

I have a jag tank too, got him at about an inch and now he's 13 inches. A few months ago I wanted bichirs too, then a few weeks after that I wanted a dovii my lfs had, then a few weeks after that (and to this day) I've wanted a festae.. I don't know if you're like me, but I want a new fish all the time. Then I look back at my jaguar and remember why I like him so much. The way I see it is ill be doing this for a long time.. Why make the mistake of throwing out a fish you've gotten attached to when one day it'll go on its own? Down the road when my jag dies (most likely from hitting the hood and falling out, he hits a 10lb weight off the hood, and any heavier bends the good) ill just buy the next fish in line though, and my jag can always be a memory, instead of a potential loss because I wanted a new fish
