in case of an earth quake, has anyone prepared their tank for one?
after Haiti and hearing about how the san andreas is almost due in nor cal i think earth quakes should raise concerns about securing our tanks. i mean the stands we have might not keep them from tipping over or cracking.

I dont know how one would secure a fishtank in the case of such an event but I'd suspect that those who have to worry about earthquakes would have at least a few other things to be more concerned about saving.

Yes.. Im already taking proper action.. First you need to invest in a small silent generator.. In case power goes out, you can keep your tank running.. And the only other thing is strapping it down.. Other than that.. thats all you can do??

I also think about this sometimes, but If is was major earthquake, that would be the least of my worries. Now that I think of it, the particle board stand I am currently using looks unstable now in the event of a big quake.

sell your fish and that way you don't need to worry about heartbreak. thats a joke. i would guess strapping it to the stand with a large tow-strap, and then bolt the stand to the floor and your should have a stead tank. strap the tank down the side (left to right) not over the front (front to back).

thanks for the imput...and jerzyperson the tow strap might be a good idea.
and Da Chosen SouL the generator wasnt a bad idea.
i had a small tremor last year in my area it shook pretty well but the water in the tank was the only thing that seemed to take effect on sloshing around for a good few minutes

honestly if you really are worried and invested thousands into your fish like I have.. Then a generator is a MUST. 2 years ago we had a big earthquake, and knocked power out for miles and for hours.. We were the only house hold in a 10mile radius that had power..

I plugged my fishtank to the generator as well as the refrigerator so the food wont spoil. Trust me. this would be the best investment you will make.. Make sure its a Silent generator with no Carb output.. This is save you so much money in the long run..

I forgot to add.. If you live in CALI like I do, then I would start preparing right now.. Scientists have predicted a HUGGGEEEEE earthquake that will NOT last for 30 sec, but for 3-5 Minutes!!!! Imagine a 8.0 thats doeskin stop for 5 min.. The caos, the power, everything is go bad!!

This is what I have personally done, call me crazy..

I have a 5000wat generator
gallons and gallons of bottled water
Army rations that last up for 5 years
3 gas masks which are rated for mustard gas
going to invest in a firearm

In a time of desastor, people go crazy.. And if I were you.. I would invest RIGHT NOW!! trust me..

wish my parents will take more action to be prepared, but they always push it off and said ya ya sure and does nothing.....

but at least, im pretty sure my 360 is stable since i got a wide footprint of 8x3 and stand is diy built with 2x4 n 4x4 , diagonally braced with plywood. but my 300gal is a lil iffy, since that one stands 5ft tall wit the stand. and only has 24" width , but then the stand im sure wont break cuz its the same design as the 360's stand, that wont stop it from tipping over though... and if it falls the other way, it'll just knock down the garage wall...
