In line setup for mag drive

That's marinedepot.com saying that, not Danner.

I can't find much on the Danner site, but it does say submerged or inline.

I wonder what marinedepot has against using them inline?
Too many returns from people installing them wrong for inline use and trying to run them dry?

just got my new mag drive 24 for my 180 gal tank that i'm setting up. as stated by the manufacturer you can either do a submersible or inline (outside the sump). :) the only thing that they said to me is that all pumps produce heat and it will contribute to the water temp going up, but look at it this way.. you won't need to much heater to heat up your tank to your desired temp. because involutarily the mag drive gives additional heat going to the water. for me more heat less wattage used by the heater and in the long run it saves electricity. that's only my opinion why i'm going to do a submersible pump and besides... if for some odd reason it leaks in the next years to come... the leak will stay in the sump hopefully i'll notice it before it gets big.:grinno:

I burned up my mag dirve 24 that I was using as a in-line pump for my sump. It burned up because one of the impeller blades broke off and jamed the impeller. Because the pump was in-line there was no water to keep it cool until I got home form work. The pump case had gotten so hot that it expanded and distorted. I was able to get it replaced under waranty due to the impeller breaking and jamming, but I now have the new one as a submerged in sump pump. If I have another impeller break and jam the sump will fill up with 3-4 gallons of water to keep the pump from getting hot enough to do damage. But if you do use it in-line make sure it is at or below the low water line of your sump so that it does not have to be primed after a power outage.

I use a 500 gph magdrive pump in-line. However, I only have it hooked up to a siphon I use to clean the bottoms of all my 50 + tanks and turn it on only when cleaning.

Runs very quiet. I have the same pump for about 5 years now.
