In Need of Advice for my SA/CA Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Other problem with the GT is they grow so slow, the other fish in the tank will always outgrow them--and then whip 'em.

No such thing when talking about ca/sa cichlids.

+1, my 125g houses my single 10" male Jag and thats it. The aggressive SA/CA cichlids you have do much better as wet pets than being in a community tank, especially when it's only 135g.

Hmm, do you enjoy (prefer) keeping the Managuense as a solo pet as opposed to having a less aggressive community? I haven't personally kept an adult Manguense or Motaguense and I don't know the personality of the adult (other than seeing them in the LFS, which are in 'community' tanks).

I'm thinking of keeping the Male Motaguense in the 135 with the Redtail Prochilodus and a small school of clown loaches. Perhaps I could introduce the female Festae and see if they pair? (keep a divider handy if necessary) Then I could move the Green Terror and the remaining stock into a 75 or 90.

What you think? Still way off?

With Parachromis species, as they get older, they like to have a certain territory size and keep any fish out of that territory, even non-cichlids. I've had a 6" jag prevent any fish get within his territory which was 4 feet long in an 8 foot long tank. The silver dollars that I had were miserable in the tank with the reduced swimming space. With motaguense generally being more aggressive than managuense, it's not far fetched that you may end up with only the motaguense in the 6 foot long 135g tank within 3 years.
