In praise of petsmart

I have to disagree, my local petco is far better than any of the 5 petsmarts I visit within the month in Indy. The staff at the Petco in Greenwood know their stuff. Most are really into the hobby themselves and are willing to tell you they do not know. The fish are not bad, but selection sucks, and often they mislabel... I have found however that Petsmart is far worse at the mislabling. I often find Kenyi (3.50 fish) being sold as demasoni (20.00 fish) Even when corrected they would say well it was in another tank and people were buying it for less so we moved it to this tank... They often do this... but the prices are not too bad for equipment. I do not buy food or anything else there... I can still get fish and the rest cheaper at local LFS...

My petsmart is like this:
Employees: Uneducated when it comes to fish.
Fish: Actually surprisingly decent. The CARE of the fish is up to par (like, they to do alot of water changes on the tanks, like 3 or 4 times a week). The selection isn't that bad, and sometimes you can score pretty big at my petsmart by working the ignorance of the employees. I go in for alot of supplies and more than once I've spotted mislabeled fish and got them for really cheap (ie, I bought a Jag for $1.50 because it was in a "mixed african cichlid" tank. I sold the Jag to a "real" LFS for $8).

Supplies: Yep, I go to PetSmart constantly for supplies. Price Matches can't be beat, and if I bring in a print-off of BigAls or Dr. Fosters and Smith, I get big $$$ off without Shipping Charges and without the wait of online. So there ya go. Employees bad, fish ok, supplies good.
i think your statment about the employees is to vage not all the employee are uneducated, i work at petsmart and im not uneducated and the people i work with know a lot to, some more than other but they still know stuff. you are correct about the water changes we vacuum the tanks once a week and the water is on drip system kinda thing, it consently is getting replaced with freshwater.

Im sure ill get flamed for this statement ..but the only people who have problems with fish stores are people who have no idea what they want or require to take care of fish. Tossing everything together and then blaming the store for not stopping there actions ..If you really care you would have looked up the info yourself. Youll be surprised what you learn not depending on others, but then..you cant blame anyone.......
(((OK SEND THE HATE MAIL !!! IM GONNA BURN !!!)))
very true, good point

I don't really see how its an employees fault for customer ignorance.

They are just dong their job... which is basically feed the fish occasionally, get rid of the dead ones, bag fish when told what the customer wants, right down the fish price on bag, say "have a nice day" and move on.
we feed the fish twice daily

Petsmart Pacu will be fine in a 55 for awile, they do grow fast but here there lucky to be dime size..

pacu's need about 300gals they get like 3'+ long and about 2'+ tall I guess you would say...

It's funny you should mention that....

I have a petsmart pacu that i bought @ the size of a quarter and now he's pushing 10" and growing too fast. I am currently building a plywood tank for him so he wont be cramped for long.

9" in 6 months is pretty impressive. (Bought on February 12, 2007)

We have a petsmart here in boise, from your posts i'm intrigued, maybe i'll go visit and see what they are like.

Don't bother going to the Boise store, and drive to the Meridian store.. the difference is like day and night, and you will understand why posts and arguments like this occur.. Say Hi to Liz and Star for me..
