In praise of sponge filters...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've gotten into the habit of hiding them behind rocks and driftwood, or throwing them in the sump of my bigger tanks to keep established for emergency setups. I'm not sure what brand I'm using, but I'll look at the box and post it later.

4"x8" cylindrical open cell on powerheads or pumps. I use them in temporary & hospital tanks and like Rallysman, keep a few cycled in the sumps (you have to store them somewhere anyway). I use the bubble-up sponge filters in the small tanks (<10g) for small stuff.

Kept in water they seem to last forever. I've got some that are 30yrs old (1). I bought 4 a couple of months ago just 'cause they were on sale real cheap, otherwise it's been several years.
