While cleaning a 125 on the weekend I found that my pleco has been chewing away at a sponge filter. He seems to have eaten about 10% of it.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if they found the fish got sick.
:WHOA:

lol. it happened to my bubble filter and the pleco is still growing. Here is the one I bought: bubble filter

Good thread!:headbang2 Let's keep it going with pros and cons. I have always wanted to use sponged filters but never got enough info to support why I should get one.

It's a great bio-filter. Also, if you have one running for a month or so in a mature tank, you can move it to a new tank next to the intake of ie. AC 110 and it will seed it very quickly. If it can handle the bio-load you won't have to add another filter. Keep in mind that it doesn't clean up the poop, so you will have to keep up with water changes.

HV is the "H-5" model (Hydrosponge 5). I believe its rated fro 125 gallon tanks. I run three and an XP-3 in a 125. So far only one HV is being eaten.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. lol. I'm having the same problem too. I'll probably need to get a new one in 6 months time.

I just rinsed the sponges on my pumps today (in tank water of course) The water was BLACK. It looked like a flat pack of brine shrimp it was so dark and full of little critters. I think I might have found what was causing my tank to be crazy (one week nitrites high, ammonia 0, next week nitrites 0, ammonia high) I hope everything balances out this week, I will test tommorow. Crazy thing is, my nitrates are always 0. Gotta love purigen. I love my sponge filters too, they are awesome. Really easy to clean, and I always know I have filters in case something fails.
