in tank heaters vs. inline heaters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm waiting for my inline to come in the mail. definitely look forward to getting the unsightly/untrustworthy/shock hazard intank out of there!

All you need is one line heater. I have a 300w on my 150 and it works great.

Guys,

In theory this will work great (and does, but bear with me). But those of you with larger tanks (90gl +) with large bioloads requiring multiple larger canister filters might not find an easy fit here. The issue becomes the OD of the heater input and output in comparison to the filter hose ID. Some of the popular higher wattage Inline heaters (lets use the previously mentioned Hydor heaters for example) might only have say a 5/8" OD on the input and output flanges of the heater (Hydor 300W for example) and your popular large canister filters will have hoses in excess of 7/8" to 1" ID hoses (Fluval FX5, Marineland C-530 for example). What do you do then? A reducer? They can be had. But at what cost to the canister GPH flow? What about potential leakage at the reducer/hose interfaces? Double check those hose specs and try to match up the heater flange OD with the filter hose ID.

Just something to think about BEFORE you spend your hard earned $ on that swanky new inline heater.

^^ thanks man good to hear.. i think my canister has a small hose.. i have two eheim 2234s..
I have a Hydor on the Eheim pro II. I didn't have any fitting issue. I prefer to use metal clamps over the plastic lock nut.

I use two Hydor 300watt ETH in lines with my FX5. Just used vinyl tubing instead of the included stuff and then built stuff out of PVC from the hardware store.

DMD123,

Had you ever run the FX5 without the inline Hydors? I'm very curious as to how much of a flow reduction was observed if so. I was planning on doing the same thing with my two C-530's, but didn't want to risk leakage and severly limited GPH output in an Oscar tank.
