In your fish keeping experience how often has a "impulse fish buy" worked out?

5% for me as well, though I'd say peaceful fish bought on impulse tend to have a higher success rate for me lol

as of recently I would say 50% The past 5 or so years I have limited my impulse buying drastically. Around the same time I got married hmmm anyways. 2002 -2008 I had fish buying ADD and was trading fish like baseball cards at that rate I had about a .01% success rate. I had 7 tanks going at 1 time.

My last 4 impulse buys where all in the last 6 months and I got a JAG, Wild Oscar, Pair of Fire Mouths and Redspot Severum. I cant decide which new world I like best. These are fish I have wanted for but did buy on an impulse. FM and RED Dots are doing well think I am sticking with these. Thinking of rehoming Jag and Wild Oscar not sure yet.
 
Lately I have been on a good streak since my wife will restrain me from anything but plecos after I impulse bought three red devils a few months ago...I'd say 25% typically but 11/13 plecos worked out more recently.

To be perfectly honest - All of my current fish were impulse buys, but I knew what I was getting into. I still have them all.
They ended up being my favorites. Everything else, I sold, or gave away.
 
Through the years I have bought thousands of fish, many on impulse. How do you think you end up with a fishroom, tanks and ponds outside, and tanks in almost every room of the house. LOL! I would say my success rate is over 80% on impulse buys. If something doesn't seem to be working out, I resell it at a fish club.
