In your opinion what makes a tank a "Show Tank"?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have to say a tank without shy fish, I did this had everything prefect added discus got a shy bunch and well they destroyed the tank!! too shy always hiding had to remove most of the plants to see them only time they come out is to eat.

other then that I would say

- Has to have active fish that look healthy

- A decent scape or a very clean bare bottom

-Clean glass, no water drips dried onto them etc

-quite setup, If I have tanks in the house I always expect them to be silent, I dont like the sound of water draining down a sump why I try to relax in front of a tank etc spray bars are fine but that water tumbling with air sucking together is a no no but thats more a weird issue of mine! lol

I think it changes for everyone what pleases someone may displease another, I enjoy seeing all the filters, tubing running same with my PC i like it open so I can see all the parts moving where as others will prefer everything hidden out of site.

The tank that is solely designed to show off that one kind of fish and is designed to show it in its natural environment so the fish look at home relax and perfect

This is a good one but in my opinion it can also apply to a nicely aquascaped biotope set up with several fish.

It's all about the fish.. and by that I mean Healthy, well cared for, quality specimins. I guess I spent too much time in the horse show world.. but to me the health and over-all quality of the fish being housed is most important. not gonna lie some of my set-ups look like compleate junk. But I always get compliments on how healthy my fish are, by hobbyists and family/friends. I find it sad when I see a really nice set-up and the fish are all half dead, imo thats not a show tank. But a tank can look like it's about to fall apart but if it's houseing even a really nice and obviously unstunted, and well cared for Oscar.. thats a show tank to me... It "Shows" the fish is healthy, and obviousely well-cared for by a dedicated owner.

Of course if you can take that stunning looking tank, and house stunningly healthy fish = Money

I thought "show" tank meant a large front glass (this is how all the major manufactures sell them labeled), meanwhile a "display" tank is one you put alot of effort in asthetics.

I double the "effort" post, and raise it a "passion and caring". :)

This....i have very little money..allot of my equipment is mismatched not pretty, my stand is bare sealed wood.. my fish are not what people call colorful or "showy" but i put all my effort and care in to replicating there natural environment,

effort, passion, and care make a show tank !
