Inaccurate Ammonia Test kit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ most likely problem with the test kit, cross reference with another test kit like Sera

If it still shows positive ammonia reading, try adding more filter media.
I suspect you have insufficient media for Nitrosomonas.

There is a lot number on the API test bottles. The last 4 digits should be month and year. The effective use should be at least a year. Its really simple to see if its your test kit. Get a bottle of drinking water and test that at room temp.

Did you have someone else compare the color to the card to get a second opinion? You might be slightly color blind. I'm not joking or trying to be funny,, I've heard that some people can't see the test colors right.

I'll have to test it tomorrow. I did look at the lot number and for the two bottles the last 4 digits are "0311" and "0211"

Hello; Just a thought; perhaps you can buy a bottle of distilled water to use as a test standard. Distilled water should have no chemicals at all and a neutral pH. (Do not actually know if comercial distilled water is pure, but it ought to be.) (Also, it is my understanding that bottled drinking water can be filtered tap water and/or ground water. I am fairly sure the bottled water around here is ground water from a limestone cave system.)
