I have read that people breed fish from the same parents (brother and sister) to bring out a recessive trait. Are there negative effects from doing this? Weakened immune systems, Deformities, etc?

of course there are side effects but no really that big.

i mean look at electric blue dempsys.

Ugh, they are more prone to ....DEATH!

IT makes the offspring more fragile due to weakened immune systems. Not only that, but you'll be more likely to get deformed fishies, yay. XD Kinda like if your dad were to make a kid with your sister . . . not a good outcome, lol.

It's not really a taboo, but aside from all the negative things said above, when breeding for a certain trait, breeding a brother/sister pair who have that trait helps "lock in" that desired trait. It's done alot, especially with livebearers.

controled linebreeding can be safe and trouble free as long as you outcross every other generation or so. This is the only way that genitic sports have made it into the pet trade at all over the years.

Do it, it would happen in the wild quite often. Most other aminals breed with anything one of thier species. Same with fish, but humans cant breed with own family. Just do it. You will not get a weaker fish.

I read on cnn.com or something that some scientist could prove that, genetically, it's now okay to breed with a cousin. I don't really buy it though, I'm thinking this scientist just had a really hot cousin and wanted to justify it.
