While inbreeding fish can lead to the display of recessive and sub-dominant traits in fish we need to remember that to much inbreeding leads to major (and scientifically documented) problems such as, but not limited to: decreased lifespan, weakened immune system, spinal and musco-skeletal deformities, mental retardation, aggression issues, jaw deformities, eye problems, even instant death when two sets of the wrong gene are in the same embryo.

Outbreeding
Please don't just buy two of the same fish, from the same store and breed them together, instead get fish from different sources if possible, so they are less likely to be related, this supports the economy better as well.

Also when you breed fish please refrain from breeding the offspring to their siblings and parents to often.

With existing colonies of fish be sure to add new fish to improve the gene pool every once in a while

I agree 100% with this. You see imbred mutations of fish wayy too often at pet stores nowadays. When a whole batch is deformed, you can almost guaruntee that its not from just one generation of inbreeding.

I started this thread because a fool (who will not be named), thought that inbreeding "was not a problem, and that no one cares about that" so I'm doing this for the undereducated who are actually willing to learn (rant over).

What I hate seeing is fish that are obviously not ok , due to a very preventable problem

You are a fool my opinions with not change because you run to try to get cheerleaders. You are a true fool because you have no idea what the purpose of the fish I'm breeding are for. I have adult pair of Haitians and a pair of their fry in case something happens to them. All the fry my adult pair have been having for the last few months are used for feeders. Any fry from the young pair will be also used as feeders. I very very sell fish anymore to people other than my friends, I haven't sold fish in this site in years and probably will never again so it's makes no difference if my feeders are inbreed. Stop trying to run other people's tanks and worry about your own FOOL. Also I breed working performance dogs for years so I know all about inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing Fool. I'm done feel free go on and on with your mute point. Before you decide to tell me what to do with my fish maybe you should have asked what my plans for them were you FOOL.

Its gotten significantly worse lately it seem too. Its gone from just common petstore fish like tetra, guppies ect. To some of the more common monsters. Look in any chain petstore and they all carry deformed dempsey, jags, devils ect. My local petco is stocked full of jag fry right now that all have some sort of snubnose deformity. Its sad to see.

Yeah I'm stating to see spinal tail kinks in jags, even worse immune systems in guppies, flowerhorns only living half as long, bent jaw deformities in many cichlids etc

Yep. Thats why anything i have gotten in years livestock wise has been ordered online. Most from rapps. For something that youll raise for more then a decade, i would rather pay more for a healthy nstural specimen

Or from a responsible breeder.
In my old neighbor hood we used to trade guppies we bred, for the best genetics and variation in colors, a tank with 200 guppies in it was more impressive than I thought it'd be
