The quickest and simplest option I believe is just place ball valve between the pump and the tank. Cut the the tubing, place the ball valve, secure it with clamps .... you are done.
Already have that mesh stuff too I might just break off every other or so then use the mesh over it was going to put the mesh on anyway

What I'm talking about is from a craft store it was like 59 cents a sheet I got it in black. It plastic and is for cross stitching or something the holes in it are like 1mm square I cut out a good majority of my overflow teeth only leaving enough to secure the mesh to it, my plan is to use fishing line to tie it to my remaining teeth. I was going to glue it but it'd be a pain to clean so this way I can just clip some lines and remove it to wash it... I may or may not leave my pre filter sponges In place still not sure but it should increase flow rate and remove any large junk so it doesn't clog up my bio balls in my wet/dry filter also by removing 75% of the teeth I should have enough flow to run my return pump at full power thus Turing my tank over 6 times an hour oppose to 4 or 5 .. And I'm hoping if I do breed my umbees and I do get fry they won't be sucks into the overflow
well my situation is the same as you.. my overflows from marineland have a max flow of 700gph per corner and it comes with 2 corners.. currently my pump is pushing 1700gph but i Tee it off to an UV but still it's still pumping too fast..
