Increasing tank Size as pleco grows?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi all second post here and thanks everyone for all the help last time. Thisseems to be a great community :)

We have been looking for a larger variety pleco and have i think narrowed down to either a sunshine (if we find one at a good price) a royal, a l90 paps or a 137. It will eventually live in a 180 but we want to get one really small (2-3in) and watch it grow and yes we realize it can take many years. We do have a 20l and a 55 my 20 has our new (2in) orange seam in it but I'm wondering we can start with one of the smaller tanks and move it as it starts to grow? Like start with 20 until it hits like 4in, 55 till li I'm like 7-8in. It even just start with the 55. Just expecting we would never find a 2in royal in a 180. Currently we have some various small tetras a Betta a bulldog and an orange seam plec. Some will be moving to the 180 some will stay in current homes we don't know if we will keep the 55 or just the 20 after. It will likely be quarantined in a 20 or the 55 at the very least depending on when we move what fish over.
I think doing a growout tank is feasible especially with monster fish. But plecos in general are quite slow growers which is why their price differs greatly even with only 1-2 inch size difference, so if you get a small one, it may stay small for awhile. I love to see my fish grow but just for my royal, i went for a larger specimen so my endlicheri wouldnt have any ideas.

Is it a L191? I heard those are the fastest growing royal. And what do you feed them? Cos 2 to 8 in 2 years is extremely fast.
Yeah it's a 191. I keep a near constant food supply of veggies in the tank, lots of wood of several types and a continuous freshwater drip (~40gpd) for excellent water quality.

It's gotten so comfortable with me that it will wait in its usual veggie spot for me to put fresh stuff in. I can pretty much pet it while I place veg, it doesn't scoot away or act scared.

Food-wise its: zucchini, melon, sweet potato, pumpkin, butternut squash, acorn squash, algae wafers and hikari sinking cichlid gold

How do I identify the type of royal? Also can anyone help me with the best setup? I have smooth tsn stones with pieces of slate a couple caves and 3 pieces of driftwood. Hob type filter and an internal powerhead type. 78degrees, some tannins.

Well i asked a guy when he posted about his L27 teles pires and he helped me identify mine. Correction mine is a L27 tapajos. For L190 and L191 its quite easy, just look at the lines, broken lines are L191 may also have dull coloured eyes, L190 have lines across the whole body and may have orange eyes. The L27s are literally a whole new different kettle of fish. The differences are minute but make all the difference in price.

Mate, planet catfish is quite outdated and can be confusing. This was told to me by the guy who identified my pleco. I think his name was rotary something.
