My breeding pair last spawned around 6 or 7 weeks ago, and I left them to look after the fry. About 50 little Angels have survived and Mum & Dad seem to be doing a great job.

Last time I left them with fry, they started laying again after a few weeks, with the fry still in the tank. I swiftly moved the fry, but the disturbance caused the pair to eat the eggs.
I noticed last night that Mum was getting ready to lay, and, sure enough eggs on the slate today.

What I found weird was that the 6/7 week old juvies were allowed to swarm all over the slate, even while the eggs were getting fertilised.

What happened next took me totally by surprise.

After a significant amount of eggs had been laid, Mum & Dad sat back and the juvies started breaking into the eggs and eating them!
This appeared to have been the plan as the breeding pair just sat there watching them do it!

Is this normal as I've never heard about this before..?
I've only had this pair for about 5 months - first time I've bred Angels.

Ha - I feel like a noob!
Girl at the LFS I've just been to said the same thing happened with her Gold Severums, but to make matters worse, the male then ate all the swimming fry, all the eggs that were left and choked to death!
Thank gawd I separated Mum & Dad into another tank before I left!

That's very interesting behavior!

I've not heard of this before, but it does make sense....some times the parents will abort the spawn and eat everything if the conditions wern't right....

Perhaps the fry wern't getting enough food....and so this was a easy way for the parents to feed the fry?

it's an idea...

My fry have always grown faster on a diet that included younger siblings lol
