Indo Datnoid bully

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OP, I was in the same situation. The 10" leporinus was doing a great job at messing with them tigers all the time so they didn't turn on each other too much. Then I added a third tiger, same size at around 9"-10". The new one quickly became The alpha, which was very interesting. Then I added 5x redhooks, 3"-5", which I later regretted. The Alpha got bullied by the other two dats, got hurt and then died.

What I tried before adding the third dat was adding a big 13"-14" pink giant gouramis, which really kept the two dats in check. The tank was peaceful till the GG got to around 16"-17", when she turned to the dats hunting them down to the point I had to put up a divider. Then later I gave the GG away. So you may want to try adding a bigger fish, may be a pike or aro, if you still want to keep the two dats.

Good luck, and keep us posted as I'm interested to hear what direction you take.

All I had to do was read the first line of the OP to understand the problem.

Never, ever, ever keep 2 dats together. 3 is even a risk. You're best off with 1 or 5+ to spread aggression.

You'll be less likely to hav problems if u hav 3 or more. However, ive had 6 in 1 tank, and still had aggression issues. But regardless of how bad it got, ive never lost a dat to it getting picked on too much. The longer they together, they seem to establish order. Like any aggressive species, you'll still always hav fighting from time to time.

Thx all, im planning to add more indo dats, but for now i havent had time to visit the LFS. Both dats seem to be getting on with each other better, and the bullied one has found a hiding place of its own.

Hello guys i've added a new indo datnoid last week and it's been going on better than before. Even though it's smaller and more timid than the previous two, it still has a good nature and is particularly aggressive at feeding time. Thx for all the help. I added a flagtail that i've had for a few months now into the tank. Unfortunately the flagtail was quite stressful even though it was much larger than the datnoids and was very afraid of them. After a few days, it somehow died and i found it sucked into the filter.

Anyways, does anyone know how to make datnoids more active? mine keep lying down and leaning to the glass wall. i've tried adding 3 clown loaches before and it worked, until one was mysteriously eaten. The main suspects are either the datnoids or a previous tankmate, a silver aro. so i moved the remaining two into another tank, with other asian fish. Any suggestions on fish to make datnoids more active? Another fish i heard that could do it was the distichodus sexfasiatus.

IMO when it comes to dats and their activity in the tank, more fish does not necessarily help.

Have you been changing around deco?

Dats are pretty sensitive when it comes to changes in the tank, ex. New fish, moved piece of driftwood, new piece of driftwood or plant, etc.

I started out with 2 indos then the bullying and fighting increased so I added an NTT. Was unfortunately too late and lost one of the indos. I then added another NTT. This group on tw other hand leveled out fine and tool some time for them to gain some confidence and now the big indo leads the group.

Hope this helps bro :) and I'm sorry if i just "word vomitted" haha

Cheers!
