The big bay area
do u guys think that they can stay in freshwater for the rest of their lives?

I would have to say 'yes'. There's a population, in Thailand, that live and breed in a lake completely cut off from the sea. You can get additional info and pics by doing a google on Megalops cyprinoides.

Thats a completly seperate population though. Tarpon are saltwater fish and that is just a population of them that have evolved to live in freshwater. It could work, but i think saltwater would be better in the long run.

The Indo-Pacific tarpon is amphidromous, moving easily from salt to fresh for no apparent reasons. If they were anadromous (moving from ocean to freshwater for breeding) I wouldn't have suggested the possibility of keeping them in FW for life. I would have recommended a gradual increase in salinity until full marine levels were achieved as the fish reached adulthood. But, these tarpon (and several species of FW mullet from the same regions) appear to do just fine in FW for life.

I have a trio of indo-pac tarpons in my 650 with a shoal of 5 IP mullet. Very active tank except for the FL gars and tropical gar at the surface. My 16" af aro lines up with them when they cruise as a group around the tank.
