It is Diy, but the bio medium is 5 gallons of seachem matrix, mechanical is open cell foam and those micron filter felts, similar to sump socks.

Is the foam or felt exposed to air or submerged? If exposed to air they need to be in some sort of fairly air-tight enclosuer. The odor is the decaying of the crude the filter is catching.

Yah, they're air exposed, thanks I will try and submerge them. Also the test said no ammonia.

no, It isn't my bio media, but I probably should stop cleaning it with tap water. The micron filters have to be cleaned with tap and a high pressure hose and bleach.
