Indoor Pond Filtration

How do you people filter your large ponds.. and what is the gph you filter. Still looking for suggestions.

I usually run a bio tower along with a 55 gallon drum mechanical filter on all of the large ponds that I set up. I normally use one or two submergable pumps in the pond itself in the 1500 GPH range plus a smaller pressure rated unit as a lift pump for the bio-tower. On larger ponds I always go with a standard pool filter pump in the 1.5 to 2.0 HP range. These dont require a lift pump.

Mechanical media for the drum is usually commercial floor buffing pads available at Grangers or any other industrial supply outlet. Always provide a bypass at the top that can handle the entire output of the pumps for when the pads clog.

have a look at the large water butts at supply places they are pretty cheap,or a rubbermade sump is also a good option .

My pond has a Sta-Rite Posi-Flo pool filter. It runs at 40PSI and has a max flow of 4200 GPH. I currently am cycling the tank so zero bio load, but I intend to put in a second filter (sand filter + inline UV filter or a combo filter with UV).

My pump is 10K GPH 1HP pool pump. My pond is 3600 gallons (3800 max, but not filled 100% at the moment).

I hope by now you have a pond and filter running and that everything is all worked out...

I just wanted to add something to what i already posted on this topic.
I asked this forum about a design for the filter I was useing last winter and I was lucky enough to find WOLF3101.

Wolf looked at my current system that was a mess, and more or less told me to toss that crap out in the garbage while I made a new filter in keeping with a proven design.
So thats what i did!

Wolf gave me some very clear dirrections on how to make a filter he has had very good luck with and I am here to report that my new filter works like a charm!

The pond stays clean, and is never green even if it does sit in sunlight for 3 to 4 hours each day.
The fish appear happy and healthy and the plants floating in the water also seem in good condition.

Im planning on making my indoor pond into a type of pond thats connected to another outdoor pond.
(Still working on the design as I have never seen a topic where my idea was tried out)
So because I plan to have twice as much pond water to filter I also plan to add to my filter system with an additional unit.
WOLF said that my current system that he helped me design could handle the extra work, but the truth is, WOLF's filter design was so fun to make that I want to make another just for kicks!
